Starts at Home ||
Jennifer Tynes
The Steelyard, 10 am-6 pm

“Starts at Home” combines narrative and poetic strategies to guide the listener through an unpredictable landscape: the listener’s own neighborhood. Participants will receive headsets at the Steelyard hub, and then choose a familiar neighborhood to walk through while listening to the provided audio. The project also includes an Internet bulletin board for discussion, revision, and distribution of unconventional maps.

Dark Trail with Ice Cream ||
Sarah Zurier
Start: Brown University’s List Art Center, 64 College St., 8:00 pm
End: Providence Atheneum, 251 Benefit St.

Take a walk in the long, narrow, uncomfortable shoes of H.P. Lovecraft. Visit his haunts, houses, settings for stories, views, visions, and vistas and hear about them in his own words. Some know Lovecraft for his horror stories, science fiction, and poetry; others know him as a sharp observer of place— a critic, a historian, a preservationist, an urban geographer, a social observer (and rarely a kind one). Ramble the streets as he did, from dusk to dark with ice cream.

Everyone in the city is welcome to attend, and cupcakes will be served. Bus Party is a celebration of the urban landscape that uses the city bus as a mobile meeting place for interaction. We hope to encourage public interaction by utilizing the existing infrastructure of public transportation to connect diverse parts of the city.

Curb Appeal Swap ||
Betsy Coulter
The Steelyard, 10 am-6 pm

Curb Appeal Swap is a snapshot exchange event where everyone is invited to trade a personal snapshot for one of my snapshots of found objects at the curb. During the two days of the Psy-Geo Provflux I will drive around Providence taking snapshots of objects that have been put out for garbage pick-up. Several times during each day I will return to the conference with a new batch of pictures. They will be clipped to the wall for display. Viewers are invited to select a snapshot to keep, providing they replace it with a snapshot of their own. The replacement snapshot may be of any subject matter. If you are interested in participating please bring a snapshot with you to the conference.

Construct-a-Brick Workshop||
Aymar Ccopacatty
The Steelyard, 2-6 pm

Construct-a-Brick uses bricks as collaborative constructive units, as many units are necessary to make up the whole. These bricks are made of adobe (soil) or an adobe/concrete mixture. The simplicity of making and stacking the bricks invites involvement in the placement and layout of various constructions tailored to the human scale; the various constructions will explore the relations between human, architecture and environment. Bricks occupy a cross cultural commonality in being a cheap long lasting construction technique used throughout the first and third world. The use of Adobe as a building material is totally alien to New England’s moist climate. This material displacement strives to visibly evoke the invisible third world, which is forever present and simultaneously forgotten in the United States.
