At the Eugene Lang College - New School University, there is a class this term called Mapping the City, Mapping the Self. Together I and my students are developing a collective project focusing on the city and the practice of walking as an art form. The course is partly theoretical and partly practical, involving readings, walks, actions, drawing, painting and documentation with various media.

The course is conceived as a collective art project. On nearly each laboratory session we shall take a pre-established excursion in the city. Each student will keep a record of the route taken, and of the various elements encountered during the excursion, according to the specific assignment. This recording will be done in form of drawing, writing and photography. Students and instructor shall document each excursion. Students will be required to make their way around paying attention to very specific aspects of the urban fabric, and put down on paper their impressions and analytical observations. The aim is to develop a higher consciousness of the space of the city and of the elements that compose its intricate pattern - of places in which we live and work and are familiar to us or places in which we never have ventured. In both cases we will learn to look at these places with a different eye, and a fresh approach that will turn the familiar into the unfamiliar, and the unfamiliar into a place we are able to negotiate.

We will be coming to Providence to not only to show documentation of our work, but also to bring our urban experiments to a different city context during Provflux weekend.
