For Provflux 2005, I will be beginning a durational performance piece called Gangrel Stick.
The word 'gangrel' is old Scots, meaning 'vagrant'.
'Kale' is a plant which, if planted around about now and overwintered will grow to around 10" feet high. These are then harvested, dried and made into very servicable walking sticks.
A packet of kale seeds will be germinated and then planted somewhere appropriate in Providence during this year's event. Then next year, during Provflux '06, I will travel over to harvest and prepare the sticks, with the intention of distributing them during next year's event, somewhat in the spirit of 'potlatch'.
This is an ongoing piece
which I intend to carry out at various locations, with Provflux being the
maiden city for this ongoing, worldwide project.
about the artist
Jim Colquhoun is an artist and writer from Scotland. His work constructs a mythology of place in and through time, a journey into chance and perhapsness. Using performance, research and wild speculation he has attempted to liberate his environment from those who have conspired to enforce a monocular reading of space. Colquhoun is a recent graduate from the Environmental Art Department of the Glasgow School of Art.
