:: crime around the corner ::

documentation CUBE2 :: 5.19 - 6.4

website www.provplan.org

The data graphic portrays tallies of violent and property crime within a 1000’ radius of 21 sites throughout Providence, as well as “Hot-Spot” mapping of violent crime citywide.

The intent is to compare people’s perceptions of crime in and around familiar places with what official statistics indicate.

I included my own house (see “Jim’s House”) in the mix in order to test my own perception. Being that part of my job involves weekly crime mapping and analysis for the Providence Police Department I was somewhat aware of crime near my house, but I was still surprised at the numbers.

Selected Providence Police incident data, 2002 USGS Aerial Photos, RIGIS and PROLIS GIS layers, photographs, charts and tables were all used to compile data. Spatial analysis performed in ArcView 3.3, graphs and tables in Excel, are all laid out in PowerPoint.
