Operation and Education
Once the trailer and hydroponic system are complete, the project will be used
for a number of purposes. The successfull operation of the hydroponic system
will be the primary goal of the final phase of the project. As participants
experiment with different cultivars and growing methods, developments will
be pursued that will improve the environmental and productive efficiency of
greenhouse production. The project will also work with local students and
the community in educational programs designed to explore the urban landscape.
The study of the viability of urban agriculture will be used as an educational
tool for the promotion of sustainable techniques and technologies that can
be used in other urban enviroments. Community garden space, rooftop greenhouses,
and other similar projects are all an important part of city re-development
and community planning.Current Project Status 5/4/04
The project has gained considerable momentum largely due to a small group
of dedicated volunteers. Many hours have been spent on construction and the
crew is finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As the
finishing touches are put on the trailer the team has begun building the hydroponic
system. Through personal donations from the project’s participants and
a recent grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, 75% of the money needed to
complete Phase II of the project has been raised. The team expects to have
largely completed the hydroponic system and living machine by the beginning
of June 2004.
