The project is a pair of headphones with microphones builti-in and a Walkman/iPod-sized audio processing device. It is in some ways in the same spirit as Maebayashi's "Sonic Interface" and Future Applications Labs' "Sonic City."
As the listener roams, the device processes the sonic environment, refiguring it: Transient sounds get sampled and played back at more regular intervals. White noise is given harmony through a vocoding technique. A repeating internal "song" encourages listeners to experience the same sequence of processing in numerous locations.
Like a visit to a foreign
country, Universal Slack creates a sometimes
confusing effect that invites the listener to walk in areas he or she would
not have anticipated. Like a psychedelic trip, it encourages listeners to
explore things they would not normally have paid attention to and to initiate
sound-making by vocalizing or playing with objects.
