brunch friday 6.2 :: the steel yard :: 11a-3:30p

presentations times subject to change

. "Still Where It Used To Be" Nancy Austin :: 11a

...A moderated discussion about the larger question of how a city gets a cultural identity, the focus will be on the figure/ground relationship between cultural place/urban landscape. How has this worked in Providence since the 19th century? Why have institutions such as The Athenaeum, RISD, and the Art Club been able to re-invent themselves for over a century? What can we apply to the situation today?

. "PLANT!" Ben Schaafsma :: 11:45a

The PLANT! project is maintained by 6 small groups of students from Calvin College. PLANT! consists of 6 neighborhood-centric sites that have been converted from unused space to urban gardens that will act as vehicle for the participants to better understand "place" in terms of geography, a concept, topography, history, community, science, botany, the environment, psychogeography, emotions, situations and any other way imaginable.

. "ProvPlan" Jim Lucht :: 12:30p

. "McAllister 07" Enrique Enriquez, Denis Dumas, + Anouk Sugar :: 1:15a

...We will raise several questions on the industrial legacy in modern cities and how to preserve and display this heritage in public space. Our main focus is the Daniel McAllister tugboat. It is the oldest and largest tugboat to be preserved in Cnanda and the second oldest ocean-going tugboat to be preserved in the world. Yet, this artifact is currently rusting in the Old Port of Montreal. Do we have to preserve our industrial past? Is tuning this object into a museum piece a satisfactory solution?

. "I Can't Figure Out the Damn Busses" Neal Bijlani :: 2p

...A small discussion and research project about transportation/navigation resources in other cities, and a charrette about how we can work RIPTA's system out. Using workflow diagrams, simple schematic routines, and/or signs and visual indicators.

. "Re/Membering: Body in Space" Jay Ariaz, James Holland, Paul Nicholson, + Arzu Ozkal Telhan :: 2:45p

...An investigation in Body in Space, these four presenters will each talk about their differing perspectives on place and how our bodies influence space. What do vision and visuality have to do with embodiment? How can we create temporary emancipations of our bodies from the space it occupies?
