Radio Transmission Orchestra (RTO) is a completely mobile, extremely versatile, multi-channel sound installation. Combining pirate radiobroadcast and urban guerrilla art, RTO builds on a history of free speech and performance art in a simple yet effective and innovative way.
RTO is a made up of five low powered, short-range FM transmitters and thirty battery powered FM alarm clock radios. The transmission is wireless, maintains broadcast regulations set up by the FCC, and uses audio routed by a laptop. The content sent through the airwaves consists of music and soundscapes, composed primarily by musicians, composers and sound artists, although participation is open to all individuals interested in experimentation with sound design.
RTO is at its roots, a community
arts project. Through ongoing calls for works, RTO has received some notable
submissions. The content for the music/soundscapes will include work by many
emerging artists and
composers.
