performance saturday 6.3 :: Provflux Short Film Fest

During Provflux 2006, it's my aim to make, screen, and perform the second in a proposed Reading Palm series with material to be found in urban Providence. Given the great availability of time and space/material, the Providence instantiation of Reading Palm will be a work shot and edited over several days leading up to Provflux. The video will be screened at the event's Short Film Fest and include live vocal performance.
The video is a model for a site-specific poetry practice that's highly mobile and quickly reproducible. Reading Palm is a docu-intervention into particular geo-cultural locations via urban exploration, a method of praxis that engages the language (knowingly or unknowingly) visible in contemporary social milieus – advertisements, signage, plaques, ephemera such as license plates and graffiti, etc – in a way that is critical of their structures while recording them as objective fact. The images are juxtaposed in a stream-lined non-linearity that constitutes a virtual intervention into the conventional patterns of pedestrian movement by being the edited trace of an actual engagement with those pedestrian flows – virtual by way of the digital medium and actual by way of my performing the search for bits of public language both in the initial act of shooting video and the reactive performance of it.
