:: i've lost faith ::

intervention locations + times undisclosed

I propose a street performance of the simple phrase “I’ve lost faith”, spoken at various locations throughout downtown Providence and the College Hill area. Taking on the persona of a street preacher – a situation that I have arranged for another recent street intervention – the piece conjures up the anxiety of a polarized American electorate and considers the “culture wars” betwixt “blue” and “red” demographics, the infusion of religion into local and national politics, and the general skepticism regarding U.S. foreign policy in the wake of 9/11. The simplicity of the spoken language, varied only by voice level and intonation, will provide opportunities for multiple interpretations and considerations by passerby. The piece seeks to examine how language is received and responded to, particularly as it is delivered via a solitary human voice in an urban setting. “I’ve Lost Faith” asks passerby to fill in the blanks with their own meanings, or lack thereof.
