Statement:
Providence,
RI --- The Providence Initiative
for Psychogeographic Studies (PIPS) is pleased to announce its second annual
Provflux, a weekend-long event dedicated to artistic and social investigations
in psychogeography. Part festival
and part conference, it brings together visual, performance, and new media
artists, along with writers, urban adventurers and the general public. Events
will take place throughout Providence to explore the physical and psychological
landscape of the city. All events
are free and open to the public.
An
ever-growing schedule, plus current information, individual event details, and
contact information is available at http://pipsworks.com/contact/provflux.html.
Partial
list of events:
Opening
Reception :: Keynote address by Glowlab founder
Christina Ray and Dave Mandl. Film
screenings, architectural designs, interactive media, and a gallery full of
other artistic works kick off Provflux.
Artists from all over the world will be represented with mapping
projects, spatial reconstruction experiments, video/photographic documentaries
and more. Reception is free and
open to the public.
Provflux
Lecture Series :: Roundtables, lectures, and other
presentations on a range of topics and ideas will be brought to the table. Talks and discussions featuring
architectural theories, green design, non-profit networking, creating public
works, and other ideas to be exchanged will be held.
Yellow
Arrowª :: A global public art
project, urban game, and tool for collaborative experimental travel - an
interactive forum for people to leave and discover messages pointing out what
counts. Participants place arrows
to draw attention to different locations and objects -- a favorite view of the
city, an odd fire hydrant, the local bar. By sending a text-message (SMS) from
your mobile phone to 1.646.270.5537 beginning with your arrow's unique code you
associate it with a short text -- messages can range from literary quotations
to personal commentaries to game-like prompts to action. When another person
encounters the arrow, he or she sends the code to 1.646.270.5537 and
immediately receives your message on their mobile phone. http://global.yellowarrow.net/
ÒMaking
ChangesÓ :: Lee Walton :: Lee Walton is an Experientialist whose projects and performances are
full of humor, detailed planning, and interaction with the outside world. www.leewalton.com
ÒCorporate
CommandsÓ :: ikatun :: It is the
hypothesis of the Institute for Infinitely Small Things that these commands,
largely and consciously ignored by a public over-saturated with advertisements,
function at the level of the infinitely small.
ÒVirtual
Dinner TourÓ :: Marc Horowitz and J Gabriel Lloyd :: Marc Horowitz, of San Francisco, and J Gabriel Lloyd, of Providence, are artists who
utilize conversations with strangers for their performances. Using iChat AV, they will host a
nation-wide dinner, yet all participants stay in their homes to eat with one
another. This project combines
HorowitzÕs National Dinner Tour with LloydÕs Conversational Location Project, each of which highlights the
importance of conversations in everyday culture.
Bike
Maintenance Workshop/ Tours
:: Celebrate
Recycle-A-BikeÕs new and permanent relocation to the Steel Yard (27 Sims Ave)
by taking part in helping rejuvenate bicycles from their collection (or
yours). Learn and share skills
with other local bikers, and test the freshly repaired bikes on bi-hourly tours
of the city throughout the day.
(Co-sponsored by the Neo-Luddite Foundation).
Progressive
Runway Project :: In a fashion show with all clothing
made of recycled goods, this highly anticipated event will travel through
various consumer locales in the city and present a stunning display of haute
couture design with found-object accessibility. This event was a favorite last year, and promises to be even
better and full of more surprises this year!
City
Scavenger (Hunt) :: This weekend-long competition leads any
and all willing participants through the city on a race to collect items and
experiences. Great prizes will be
rewarded to those can collect all the items on the list in the shortest amount
of time while interacting in the city like never before. Registration will
begin and end with Friday nightÕs opening reception.
Urban
Backyard Golf :: Stations of golf clubs, tennis balls,
and score cards will be set up throughout the urban thoroughfares of
Providence. We provide the
materials for a 5-round game of backyard golf, and you decide where your course
will take you in our cityÕs backyard.
